Whitefield School was built 1953-1954 on the site of the disused Hendon sewage water treatment works. A Secondary Modern school, it opened in the autumn of 1954 later than originally intended giving pupils transferring in from other schools in the then Borough of Hendon and surrounding areas an extra three weeks summer holiday. The school population at the time of opening was around one thousand pupils with seven 1st year classes of between thirty and forty. At the time, classes 1 and 2 of the seven first years had the academic kudos of French or German in their curriculum and so were considered 'a cut above', the remaining five being somewhat on a par.
